The Birth of Metaverse

Science fiction author Neal Stephenson coined the word “Metaverse” in 1992’s Snow Crash. Since then, there hasn’t been much consensus on what exactly the Metaverse could become. Some experts say it will look more like Second Life (a virtual world where users can interact with computer-generated environments), while others think it will be more like The Matrix (which required users to take a special pill [red or blue] that would transport them into an alternate reality).

Prominent futurists are most eager to dive into the boundaries of what the Metaverse might look like. Experts agree that the convergence of current technologies such as search, wireless connectivity, and wearable computing could lead to an explosion in human-centered technology. The idea behind the Metaverse is that on the internet, we are creating a digital world that is parallel to our own, and every interaction we make impacts both worlds. As far as experts can tell, it’s unclear whether an IRL metaverse will ever exist, but it’s clear that it already has its roots in the Oculus Rift.

The Metaverse will emerge from the convergence of physically persistent and virtually enhanced physical reality. It is more commonly expressed in science fiction as cyberspace or a networked metaverse. Metaverse provides an opportunity to create and explore an endless variety of experiential worlds, ranging from a casual conversation between friends to highly immersive, fully sensory environments requiring assistive technology such as 3-D glasses.

The metaverse is not just one type of experience. Instead, it directs to a continuum of immersive digital experiences that will be available to users in the future, who may access it through a range of different devices and mediums. These will enable them to engage in a variety of different activities in completely digital spaces, including participating in massively multiplayer Read More...
